2015/11/16 Judging for Cherokee Photography Club, Canton, GA

I had the honor of judging the Second Chance and Photo of the Year competitions for the Cherokee Photography Club. While discussing the images was fun, wow, was it hard to choose the winners! These were the best of the best, and best of the rest, for the entire year. They met in the great theatre at the Cherokee County Arts Council, 94 North St., Canton, GA.

2015/11/12-15 GNPA Smokies Weekend

Again this year, I co-led the Georgia Nature Photographers Association’s annual Autumn Smokies Weekend. We led groups to Elkmont, Tremont, Cades Cove, Okonoluftee overlook, and Roaring Fork Motor Trail. On Sunday, special guest Bill Lea, Smokies photographer extraordinaire, (http://www.billlea.com/) led a group critique of quite a few of the images made over the weekend. The weekend ended with awards in three categories. Lots of great images were made, making judging extremely difficult.

2015/11/10 GNPA West Central GA Chapter Presentation, Pine Mountain, GA

I gave a talk to the West Central GA Chapter of GNPA in Pine Mountain, GA, on landscape photography. It was their first presentation on landscape photography since becoming a Chapter earlier this year.

2015/10/23-26 GSMIT Fall Workshop in the Smokies at Tremont

With the retirement of Willard Clay after the workshop last Fall, I have now taken over the lead of this great annual event: http://www.gsmit.org/fallphoto.html. It was quite an honor to continue this storied program, especially considering I’m following John Shaw, Pat O’Hara, Tom Till, and, for the past 30 years(!), the just-retired Willard Clay. We have a wonderful team of leaders, featuring Todd Moore, Ken Thompson, and Steve Zigler—all veteran Tremont instructors. We experienced peak fall color (and no wind!) for the entire weekend while exploring Elkmont, Tremont, and Foothills Parkway. We also had special macro and birds of prey field sessions.

2015/09/10-13 Western North Carolina Foto Fest, Asheville, NC

Once again, I participated in the Western North Carolina Foto Fest. This was the sixth annual Foto Fest! More information: http://www.wncfotofest.com/. This year, Foto Fest moved to the Asheville Event Centre on 991 Sweeten Creek Road. As always, there were numerous amazing presentations on many photo topics, with loads of great vendors. Truly a fun time!

2015/07/22 GNPA NE Atlanta Chapter Presentation, Lawrenceville, GA

I gave a talk to the NE Atlanta Chapter of GNPA in Lawrenceville, GA, on one of my favorite subjects: The Fundamentals of Photography in the Field. They met at St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, 737 Moon Road Southwest, Lawrenceville, GA.

2015/04/30-05/03 NANPA Smokies Regional Event with Willard Clay and Bill Lea

Will Clay, Bill Lea, and I led a really fun NANPA Regional Event in Great Smoky Mountains National Park:http://www.nanpa.org/conferences/Regionals/2015-Smokies/. We had NANPA members from all over the country–many of whom had never been to the Smokies. Will, Bill, and I have decades of experience teaching workshops in the Smokies, and it was exciting extending our love for the Smokies with so many skilled, dedicated, and enthusiastic photographers.

2015/04/24-27 GSMIT Spring Workshop with Bill Lea

Again this year, I joined Bill Lea, Chris Norcott, and Todd Moore at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT) for our annual Spring photography workshop. From Friday afternoon through Monday at noon, we had field sessions, presentations, and post-processing sessions. Just after lunch on Sunday, we had a fun group critique before we headed back into the field to practice what we had discussed. With four instructors, there was plenty of one-to-one time. See more details at: http://www.gsmit.org/springphoto.html

2015/03/26-29 GNPA Expo at Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, GA

As the opening act for the annual GNPA Expo, I taught a five-hour long Fundamentals of Photography in the Field class on Thursday, March 26 at Callaway Gardens. We covered a lot during the time we had: http://gnpa.org/annual-expo/2015-annual-expo.

2014/12/18 Presentation to GNPA NW Atlanta Chapter, Marietta, GA

With Vice President Tom Simpson, I was half of Two Talks by Two Toms. Tom S talked about making videos at Bosque del Apache. My part described what field gear really works for bird and wildlife photographers versus landscape photographers. http://gnpa.org/regionional-chapters/nw-chapter-marietta/prior-eventsworkshops/534-2014-12-two-programs-by-two-toms

2014/07/17 Presentation to GNPA NW Atlanta Chapter, Marietta, GA

I presented Things to Consider when Post-Processing. Learning dozens of Photoshop techniques won’t necessarily help you if you don’t have a consistent workflow. It is just as important is know why you want to make an adjustment, not just how to do it. http://gnpa.org/regionional-chapters/nw-chapter-marietta/prior-eventsworkshops/453-july-17-2014-tom-vadnais-post-processing-considerations

This year, we had both a later Fall and an unexpected hoar frost. Lots of great images were made, making judging extremely difficult. Bill Lea made another guest appearance Sunday morning to help with the critiques and judging.

2014/10/24-27 GSMIT Fall Workshop in the Smokies at Tremont

While we had another fantastic workshop, this was a bittersweet workshop for me, the other instructors, and the participants. Willard Clay retired at the end of this workshop, after teaching it for 30 years. Fortunately, we were all treated to a Willard Clay Retrospective, which moved everyone there. Will brought this workshop through its largest change in its long, storied history–the transition from film to digital. Will has asked me to take it over from him, which will be effective Fall 2015. He’s left some really big shoes to fill. The best news is that Will has agreed to come back as a guest instructor. We’re glad he is remaining part of our Tremont family. http://www.gsmit.org/fallphoto.html

2014/09/11-15 5th Annual Western North Carolina Foto Fest, Montreat, NC

Here’s a link to the contest, and to great photography workshops: http://www.gsmit.org/ and the Tremont Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153853904785316.1073741895.23012965315&type=3.

More info here: http://www.gsmit.org/fallphoto.html

For the 4th annual Western NC Foto Fest in Montreat, NC, I gave three presentations, and was one of three judges for the photo contest. As always, it was an amazing gathering of almost 250 photographers for a long weekend immersed in photography in a truly beautiful place. Get more info here: http://www.wncfotofest.com/. Hope to see you there next year.

2013/09/10 Guest Lecture at Creative Circus, Atlanta

Again for this quarter’s class on Documentary Photography, I described and showed how working professional photographers could handle assignments to document evidence for legal cases, including close-ups and specialized night photography. We discussed how the photographer must be able to capture trial exhibit-ready images, regardless of the lighting conditions, so the optimum use of camera and flash have to be second nature. I also showed some personal documentary photography of old, fading buildings, structures, and cars.
