2013/04/19-22 GSMIT Spring Workshop with Bill Lea

Again this year, I got to join Bill Lea, Jeff Miller, and Todd Moore at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT) for our annual Spring photography workshop. From Friday afternoon through Monday at noon, we had field sessions, presentations, and post-processing sessions, then wound it up with a fun group critique in one of the most diverse natural areas in the country. 2013/03/15 Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont (GSMIT) Annual Photo Contest Judging

2013/02/25 Guest Lecture at Creative Circus, Atlanta

For this quarter’s class on Documentary Photography, I described and showed how working professional photographers could handle assignments to document evidence for legal cases, including close-ups and specialized night photography. We discussed how the photographer must be able to capture trial exhibit-ready images, regardless of the lighting conditions, so the optimum use of camera and flash have to be second nature. 2013/02/19 Roswell Photographic Society Judging “Landscape Photography”

After giving a presentation about landscape photography on the 5th, RPS asked me to follow up by judging their monthly Photo Review. This month’s subject just happened to be—-Landscape Photography! 2012/11/08-11 GNPA Smokies

From Thursday, November 8 through Sunday, November 11, I was one of four leaders for the Georgia Nature Photographers’ Association Photo Weekend. We were based at the Talley Ho Hotel in Townsend, TN. There was a choice of four trips each day. I led daily trips to Foothills Parkway for sunrise, then to Elkmont for both morning and afternoon shooting sessions.

2012/10/19-22 GSMIT Fall Workshop

I co-taught an annual Fall workshop with Willard Clay, Todd Moore, and Ken Thompson at the Great Smoky Mountians Institute at Tremont during what should be peak Fall color in the Smokies. Every participant got plenty of one-on-one time with talks, field sessions, and post-processing sessions. It all culminated with a meaningful, and fun, group critique, featuring wine and cheese. 2012/07/14 Juror for Blue Ridge Mountain Photographers National Juried Show

I was be one of three jurors for BRMP National Juried Nature and Fine Art Photography Exhibit that will be on display in The Art Center’s Richard Low Evans Gallery in Blue Ridge, GA, from September 8 through October 14, 2012. 2012/06/21 Presentation for GNPA

My friend Don Saunders and I gave a presentation comparing the equipment needed for Landscape vs. Wildlife/Bird photography at the June meeting of GNPA at Mansour Center in Marietta, GA. As I’ve mentioned in a couple posts, it takes vastly different gear and field techniques to capture wildlife and bird images than it does for landscapes. See more information at www.gnpa.com.

One of three jurors chosen to judge entries for the first GNPA Juried Exhibit at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. The show will run from 06/26 through 09/01/12. Theme is butterflies and moths.

2012/05/26 Day-long Seminar for Booth Museum Phototography Guild

On Saturday, May 26, 2012, I conducted a seminar entitled Fundamentals of Photography in the Field. It was from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (with an hour for lunch) at the TRC Building (across the street from the museum), Room #6, 1 North Gilmer Street, Cartersville, GA 30120. We discussed how to best tell the story you intend by consciously choosing each element of exposure, your lens, and your camera position to take advantage of the light and shadows on and around your subject. On Thursday, April 12, 2012, I gave a presentation of Fundamentals of Photography in the Field and then judged for the Sweetwater Camera Club (http://sweetwatercc.org/). The meeting began at 7:00 pm at Hunter Park Community Center, 8830 Gurley Road, Douglasville, GA 30135. The photo critique theme was In Your Eyes: A picture where the subject’s eyes are the main element of the image.
